Hot Air-Through Nonwoven (Air-Through Cotton): A Buyer's Guide for Hygiene Converters

Feel the inside of a premium baby diaper and the softest layer you touch is often hot air-through nonwoven, which the trade also calls air-through cotton or hot air cotton because of its soft, cotton-like feel. It is chosen for comfort against the skin and for how quickly it moves liquid away from the surface.
This guide is for hygiene converters and distributors buying hot air-through nonwoven in rolls. It explains what the fabric is, where it is used and how to set the specification.
What hot air-through nonwoven is
The fabric is made by passing heated air through a web of fibres. The hot air bonds the fibres where they touch, without pressing the web flat, so the fabric keeps its loft. The result is soft, bulky, uniform and strong. Our hot air-through nonwoven is made from 12 to 70 gsm, with hydrophilic or hydrophobic treatment, and supplied in rolls slit to width.

Why hygiene brands use it
- Softness – the lofty, unpressed structure feels gentle against skin.
- Fast fluid acquisition – the open structure lets liquid pass quickly into the core, which is why it is used as a topsheet and as an acquisition-distribution layer (ADL).
- Consistency – a uniform web gives the same feel and performance roll after roll.
- Strength – balanced softness and strength for high-speed converting lines.
Hydrophilic or hydrophobic?
The treatment decides what the layer does in the product. A hydrophilic treatment lets liquid pass through quickly, for topsheets and ADL layers. A hydrophobic treatment repels liquid, for layers that should stay dry, such as some side and barrier components. Tell us which layer of your product the fabric is for, and we will set the treatment to match.
Where it is used
- Baby diaper topsheet and ADL
- Feminine hygiene
- Adult incontinence
- Wipes and cosmetic pads
- Filtration pre-layers
Many hygiene products combine several nonwovens. Alongside hot air-through for the top layers, converters use PP spunbond and SMS for other components, and spunlace for wipes. All of these can be combined in one container.

How to write the specification
- Weight – anywhere from 12 to 70 gsm.
- Treatment – hydrophilic or hydrophobic.
- Layer and product – topsheet, ADL or other, and the product it goes into.
- Width and roll – slit width, roll diameter and core size for your machines.
- Colour – white as standard.
How to test samples
- Feel – compare softness and loft with your current fabric, by hand and in the finished product.
- Liquid behaviour – in a sample product, check how fast liquid passes through the layer and how dry the surface feels afterwards.
- Evenness – weigh pieces across the width.
- Line running – run a trial roll at full speed and watch for breaks, fluff and winding problems.
Mistakes to avoid
- Testing the fabric alone. Topsheet and ADL performance depends on the whole product; test it in the product.
- Mixing up treatments. A hydrophobic roll on a topsheet line causes slow absorption; label rolls clearly.
- Crushing the loft. Store and stack rolls so the fabric keeps its bulk.
What to ask a supplier
- Do you run your own hot air-through line?
- Which weights and treatments can you make?
- How do you keep softness and loft consistent between batches?
- Can you slit and wind to my machines?
- Can I combine hot air-through with spunbond, SMS or spunlace in one container?
How we supply hot air-through nonwoven
Samridhi Crreation has manufactured nonwovens in India since 2004, on its own hot-air-through, spunbond, meltblown, SMS/SSMMS, needle-punch and spunlace lines. We supply converters and distributors worldwide, including under their own brand. The minimum order is one 40'HQ container, and 5–6 different products can be combined in it. We ship FOB India from Mundra or Nhava Sheva, with CIF and DAP on request, and provide REACH and SVHC declarations for customers in the European Union. Samples are free, and we pay the courier.
See weights and treatments on our hot air-through nonwoven page, or send us your specification for a quotation and samples.
