Oil Absorbent Pads, Rolls and Booms: A Buyer's Guide to Constructions, Formats and Sourcing

Oil-only absorbents are one of the most frequently reordered products in any spill-control range. Workshops, mines, ports and fuel depots use them every day, and they go into almost every spill kit. For a distributor, that makes them a steady line, but also a crowded one. The differences between a good programme and an average one sit in details that are easy to overlook when comparing quotations: the construction of the pad, the fill of the sock, the strength of the boom and the way everything is packed.

This guide is for distributors, spill-kit assemblers and brand owners who are sourcing oil absorbent pads, rolls, socks, pillows, booms and sweeps for their own label. It explains how the material works, which construction suits which job, and what to agree with a manufacturer before you place a container order.

What oil-only absorbents are

Our oil-only sorbents are made from 100% polypropylene meltblown. Polypropylene is oleophilic and hydrophobic: it attracts oils, fuels and other hydrocarbons and repels water. In practice that means an oil-only pad picks up the oil from a wet floor and leaves the water behind, and an oil-only boom keeps floating on a harbour even when it is saturated. Our oil sorbents absorb up to 15 times their own weight in oil.

Because they do not take up water, oil-only products are the right choice outdoors, on water and anywhere rain or washdown water is present. For mixed liquids such as coolants and water-based fluids, choose universal absorbents instead; for acids and aggressive chemicals, chemical absorbents. Many sites keep all three, colour-coded, so workers pick the right one without thinking.

White and blue are the industry colours for oil-only products. White also shows clearly when a pad is saturated and needs changing. Custom colours are possible on request.

Choosing the pad construction

Pads and rolls are where construction matters most. The same meltblown core can be built in different ways, and each build changes strength, lint, wicking speed and price. We make seven constructions:

  • Plain – single-ply meltblown, unbonded or point-bonded. The most economical option for general drips and wipe-downs.
  • SM – spunbond laminated on one side. The spunbond face adds strength and abrasion resistance where the pad is walked on or dragged.
  • FM – fine-fibre meltblown on one side, for a smoother, lower-lint surface.
  • SMS – spunbond on both sides for maximum durability, a good choice for floors with foot and trolley traffic.
  • SMF – spunbond on one side and fine fibre on the other: a tough face on top and a soft face for wiping.
  • FMF – fine fibre on both sides for low lint, popular for cleaner workshops and assembly lines.
  • Bonded – a dimpled or embossed bonding pattern that helps liquid wick in fast, available in any build.

A simple rule: the more traffic and handling the pad will see, the more it benefits from a spunbond face; the more it is used for wiping, the more a fine-fibre face helps. If you are replacing an existing product, send us a sample and we will match the construction.

The six formats and where each works

Pads

The everyday workhorse for machine drips, leaks and overspray, under vehicles, gearboxes and presses, on workbenches and in drip trays. Sizes are made to order, with optional perforation so users can tear a pad in half.

Rolls

For aisles, walkways, ramps, maintenance bays and large areas under plant. Width, length and GSM are made to order, and perforation lets users tear off exactly the length they need.

Socks and pillows

Socks are flexible tubes that mould around machine bases, corners and drains and dam a spill before it spreads. Pillows hold more liquid in a small footprint, which suits persistent drips under presses, valves and gearboxes. Both have sonic-welded outers and are filled to the weight you specify.

Booms and sweeps

Booms ring a spill on water and absorb only the hydrocarbon. Ours are netted and sonic-welded, with end fittings so boom can be linked to boom; we also make oil boom netting for buyers who fill booms themselves. Sweeps are continuous absorbent blankets on a welded rope tunnel, drawn across the surface to lift the thin sheen that booms leave behind in marinas, harbours, effluent ponds and stormwater channels.

How to write the specification

A clear specification gives you comparable quotations and the same product on every reorder. For each item, agree:

  • Format and size – pad dimensions, roll width and length, sock or boom length and diameter.
  • Construction and weight – one of the seven constructions and the GSM for pads and rolls; the fill weight for socks, pillows and booms.
  • Colour – white, blue or a custom colour.
  • Perforation and print – perforated or plain; printed spunbond face if you want your brand on the product.
  • Packing – pieces per pack, plain polybag (standard) or printed polybags, cartons and labels (extra cost).

What to ask a supplier

  • Do you make the meltblown yourself, or buy it in?
  • Which constructions can you supply, and which do you recommend for my market?
  • Can you match a sample I am buying today?
  • Are socks, pillows and booms sonic-welded, and can you fill them to my weight?
  • Can you pack under my brand, and what does printed packing cost?
  • What is the minimum order, and can I combine oil-only products with universal and chemical absorbents in one container?
  • Do you send free samples before the first order?

How we supply oil-only absorbents

Samridhi Crreation has manufactured nonwovens in India since 2004, with our own meltblown, spunbond and SMS lines, so the absorbent core and the cover fabric are made in-house. We supply distributors worldwide under their own brand (private label / OEM). The minimum order is one 40'HQ container, and 5–6 different products can be combined in it, so oil-only pads can travel with universal rolls, chemical socks and booms. Standard packing is plain polybags; printed cartons are available on request at extra cost. We ship FOB India from Mundra or Nhava Sheva, with CIF and DAP on request, and provide REACH and SVHC declarations for customers in the European Union. Samples are free, and we pay the courier.

See every format and construction on our oil absorbent products page, or send us your specification for a quotation and free samples.
