Recycled Shoddy Felt Sorbents: A Buyer's Guide for Distributors and Tenders

More and more spill-control tenders ask the same question: how much recycled content is in your product? For a distributor, having a credible recycled sorbent in the range can decide a contract. Recycled shoddy felt sorbents are a simple, honest answer: absorbent pads and rolls made from textile waste instead of virgin polymer.

This guide is for distributors and brand owners sourcing shoddy felt absorbent products for their own label.

What shoddy felt is

Shoddy felt is made from reclaimed textile fibre: offcuts and end-of-life textiles that would otherwise be burned or buried. The textiles are opened back into fibre and needle-punched into a dense, lofty absorbent felt. Needle punching locks the fibres together mechanically, so no chemical binders are used.

The two grades

  • Oil grade – a cotton-rich felt from recycled fibre for oil, fuel and lubricant clean-up on hard surfaces, with high loft and high retention.
  • Universal grade – a viscose-based blend from recycled fibre for oils, coolants, water-based fluids and general workshop spills.

Both grades are supplied as pads and rolls. They are unperforated, so users cut them to the exact size of the job.

Where they work best

Shoddy felt is a heavy-duty, hard-surface product. The dense felt lies flat and conforms to rough floors, which makes it well suited to:

  • Workshops and service bays
  • Generator and compressor rooms
  • Depots, garages and fleet yards
  • Press shops and assembly lines
  • Paint shops
  • Site huts and plant yards

It is not designed for open water. For spills on water, choose polypropylene oil-only absorbents, which float and repel water. For a polypropylene universal range alongside the recycled one, see our universal absorbents.

What to expect from recycled fibre

Because the feedstock is reclaimed, shade and fleck vary slightly between production runs. This is normal, and it is a visible sign of genuine recycled content. Tell your customers in advance, and avoid promising an exact colour match between batches.

Why distributors add it to the range

  • Recycled content – built from reclaimed textile fibre, not virgin polymer.
  • Cost-efficient – reclaimed feedstock keeps the cost per litre down.
  • Heavy-duty drape – dense felt lies flat on rough floors.
  • Cut to any size – unperforated pads and rolls trim cleanly.

How to test samples

  • Use real spills. Test with the oils and fluids your customers handle, on the floors they have.
  • Check retention. Lift a saturated pad and see how much liquid it holds.
  • Cut it. Check that it trims cleanly with ordinary tools.
  • Look at the shade range. Ask for samples from more than one run, so you know what variation to expect.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Overstating the green claim. Say what is true – made from reclaimed textile fibre with no chemical binders – and let the product speak for itself.
  • Using it on water. It is a hard-surface product; for open water, use floating polypropylene booms and pads.
  • Promising a fixed colour. Shade varies between runs; set that expectation from the start.
  • Choosing the wrong grade. Use the oil grade where only oils and fuels are spilled, and the universal grade where water-based fluids are present too.

What to ask a supplier

  • What is the fibre source, and is it really reclaimed textile?
  • Are any chemical binders used?
  • Which grades, sizes and roll lengths can you supply?
  • Can you pack under my brand?
  • Can I combine recycled felt with polypropylene absorbents in one container?

How we supply recycled felt sorbents

Samridhi Crreation has manufactured nonwovens in India since 2004 and makes these felts on its own needle-punch lines. We supply distributors worldwide under their own brand (private label / OEM), packed in boxes or polybags. The minimum order is one 40'HQ container, and 5–6 different products can be combined in it, so recycled felt can travel with your polypropylene pads, rolls and socks. We ship FOB India from Mundra or Nhava Sheva, with CIF and DAP on request, and provide REACH and SVHC declarations for customers in the European Union. Samples are free, and we pay the courier.

See both grades on our shoddy felt absorbents page, or send us your requirement for a quotation and free samples.

Tell us the product, the quantity and the port.

Send a specification, a sample photo or the product you buy today. We reply with questions, samples or a container price.
