Universal Absorbent Pads, Rolls and Socks: A Buyer's Guide for Distributors

Most liquids on a factory floor are not pure oil. A machine drips coolant, oil and water together; a workshop floor sees washdown water, solvents and hydraulic fluid. For these everyday leaks, sites use universal absorbents – the grey pads, rolls, socks and pillows that take up almost any liquid that is not aggressive.
This guide is for distributors, spill-kit assemblers and brand owners sourcing universal absorbent pads, rolls, socks and pillows for their own label. It explains what universal absorbents do, how to choose the construction and format, and what to agree with a manufacturer before a container order.
What universal absorbents are
Our universal sorbents are made from polypropylene and take up both oil-based and water-based liquids: oils, coolants, solvents and water. They absorb up to 15 times their own weight in liquid. They are the maintenance team's absorbent – under machines, during servicing, for overspray and for lining workbenches.
Universal absorbents are not the answer for everything. Outdoors or on water, where rain would fill the pad, choose oil-only absorbents. For acids, caustics and unknown liquids, choose chemical absorbents. Colour coding keeps it simple on site: white or blue for oil-only, grey for universal, yellow for chemical.
Grey is the industry standard for universal sorbents because it hides grime, so pads look cleaner for longer. Custom colours are possible on request.

Choosing the construction
Pads and rolls come in seven constructions: Plain (single-ply meltblown), SM, FM, SMS, SMF, FMF and Bonded. A spunbond face (S) adds strength and abrasion resistance where the pad is walked on or dragged; a fine-fibre face (F) gives a smoother, low-lint surface for wiping; a bonded pattern helps liquid wick in fast. For heavy foot and trolley traffic, SMS is a good choice; for clean assembly areas, FMF. If you are replacing a product you buy today, send us a sample and we will match it.
The four formats
- Pads – daily drips of oil, coolant and water, CNC overspray, under vehicles and presses, drum-top dispensing stations.
- Rolls – aisles, walkways and ramps, under plant and conveyors, tear-off at workstations, lining shelves and benches. Perforated to tear to size.
- Socks – flexible tubes that mould around machine bases, sumps, corners, drains and doorways.
- Pillows – high-volume fill for persistent drips under presses, gearboxes and leaking valves, and in drip pans.
Socks and pillows have sonic-welded outers and are filled to the weight you specify. Pads and rolls can carry a printed spunbond face if you want your brand on the product.

Where they are used
- Plant maintenance
- Machine shops and CNC
- Fleet workshops
- Warehouses and logistics
- Food and beverage plants
- Facilities management
What to agree in the specification
- Format and size – pad size, roll width and length, sock and pillow dimensions.
- Construction and weight – one of the seven constructions and the gsm; fill weight for socks and pillows.
- Colour – grey or custom.
- Perforation and print – perforated or plain; printed face for your brand.
- Packing – pieces per pack, plain polybag (standard) or printed polybags, cartons and labels at extra cost.
How to test samples
- Use the real liquids. Test with the coolant, oil and water mix your customers actually have, not only with tap water.
- Watch the speed. Note how quickly the pad wicks in a small spill and whether liquid spreads across the surface first.
- Check strength wet. Pick the saturated pad up by one corner; it should hold together.
- Walk on it. For floor use, check how the face stands up to foot and trolley traffic.
Mistakes to avoid
- Selling universal pads for outdoor oil spills. In the rain they fill with water; oil-only is the right product there.
- Using them on aggressive chemicals. Acids and caustics need chemical absorbents.
- Comparing pads only by count per box. Pad size, weight and construction decide how much each pad absorbs.
What to ask a supplier
- Do you make the meltblown yourself?
- Which constructions do you supply, and can you match my current sample?
- Are socks and pillows sonic-welded, and filled to my weight?
- Can you pack under my brand?
- Can I combine universal, oil-only and chemical products in one container?
- Do you send free samples before the first order?
How we supply universal absorbents
Samridhi Crreation has manufactured nonwovens in India since 2004, with its own meltblown and spunbond lines, so the absorbent core and cover fabric are made in-house. We supply distributors worldwide under their own brand (private label / OEM). The minimum order is one 40'HQ container, and 5–6 different products can be combined in it. Standard packing is plain polybags; printed cartons are available on request at extra cost. We ship FOB India from Mundra or Nhava Sheva, with CIF and DAP on request, and provide REACH and SVHC declarations for customers in the European Union. Samples are free, and we pay the courier.
See every format and construction on our universal absorbents page, or send us your specification for a quotation and free samples.
